The biocrust project
Without the nitrogen-capturing ability of biocrust - mosses, lichens, and cryptobiotic soil - our deserts would only consist of sand dunes. In partnership with the Nature Conservancy, The Canyonlands Research Center, and Utah Museum of Contemporary Art, Blank Space produced an immersive film with the purpose of educating museum visitors about the importance of preserving and protecting Biocrust. The project was headed by Jorge Rojas and Dr. Sasha Reed, and the final work is special to us as filmmakers because it exists in an intersection between art and science. The project is on display at UMOCA until June 2024.
